What does it mean to guard our heart?
Proverbs 4:23 says we must guard our heart with all diligence because it determines the issues of life.
Look at the words "determines" and "issues of life". Being happy or sad, worry or peace, angry or calm, doubt or trust, they are all rooted in our hearts.
We are what we think and the Bible also says this "as a man think in his heart, so is he"..well, there is a good news! We are not our thoughts! We can choose to be a puppet (victim) of our thoughts and emotions or we can master them! How? By changing the thoughts? Is that simple? In fact, we are a chronic thinker. We think all day long, our brains are busy think and make noises in our little head. Even when we sleep, our brain never stop working.
What to do then?
First, I believe we must filter whatever comes into our minds. We can allow and choose what kind of thoughts that enter our mind and what are not. Any guidelines here? Phil 4:8 says that we are to think what is holy, pure, lovely, admirable, honorable, right, excellent and worthy of praise.
Many people live unhappy life not because they have bad circumstances, but mostly they embrace the destructive thoughts that are not alligned with the kingdom of God.
Guarding our heart means we must pay attention to what we are thinking and reject automatically thoughts that promote fears, doubts, worry and anything that steal our joy and peace.
Happy guarding! You are not alone!
